Exploring the beauty of Chalkida

Time for a tour!

Experience the irresistible charm of a seaside walk along the paved promenade

The iconic seaside promenade is one of the most enchanting spots for tuning into the city’s most vibrant vibe. This is where the collective heart of the city beats.

It invites you to spend some time at a lively picturesque pedestrian street by the sea, enjoying leisurely strolls, quaint cafés with sea and harbor’s boats views, ouzo bars, delicious seafood, music, lights.

Treat yourself to a bottle of wine and indulge in a splendid sunset experience. As you walk along the promenade, your eyes will be caught by two Chalkida trademarks, located at either end of the ‘walk’:
Kokkino Spiti (Red House), a beautiful neoclassical building with exquisite interior- dating back to 1884- equipped with 30 rooms and filled with long history.

Today it houses Chalkida cultural center.
The old bridge, located at the narrowest point of the Euripus strait. This is where the real mystery of Chalkida ‘crazy waters (tidal phenomenon) takes place, every six hours and sometimes as many as 14 times during a day.

Every afternoon the old bridge opens, allowing boats to pass through the strait – an eye-catching “event” to look out while sipping on a drink at night.

The new Archaeological Museum “Arethoussa” is worth visiting!

The new Archaeological Museum of Chalkida, “Arethoussa”, opened its doors to the public at the beginning of 2021 and constitutes a valuable orientation medium for visitors to both Chalkida and the whole of Euboea. The archeological artifacts on show, hail from all over Euboea and are dated between the Paleolithic Period to the 3rd century AD.

It is housed in a 20th century industrial building, the old distillery “Arethoussa SA”, which is an exhibit in its own right and has been declared a World Heritage Site. Thematic sections, interactive virtual tours and multimedia applications offer a modern interactive museum experience for visitors.

Karababa Castle! Explore the ancient guard & enjoy the best view of the gulf…

Much more than its brilliant architecture or panoramic views of Euripus strait and Euboean gulf, the history behind it, is what makes it one of the most impressive attractions in Chalkida. The fortress tops the green hill of Fourka and was built in 1684 by the Ottomans as protection against the Venetians.

Today, inside the western rampart there is an exhibition area that houses many artefacts from the early Christian, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods of the city.

The best way to get up to the fort is to follow the path around the fort. It’s a beautiful walk of 600 meters in total, through pine trees, prickly pears and flowers, quite passable and with breathtaking views.

Take a stroll along Chalkida’s oldest neighborhood, indulging in nostalgia..

The heart of the old city, just opposite the old bridge, the castle district as they call it, beats behind the Athanaton square. It has escaped the modernization of the city and today still exudes something of Chalkida’s old charm and long history.

Indulge in a cultural experience, around the small alleys and the traditional picturesque two-storey houses, many of which are unfortunately in decay today. The amazing thing is that in this tiny neighbourhood the places of worship of three different religions managed to coexist peacefully during the Ottoman period and have endured for centuries.

The Church of Agia Paraskevi, the Jewish synagogue and the Emir Zade Mosque, still stand just a block from each other to this day. Don’t miss to pay a special visit at the Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi, the patron saint of Chalkida, which is the most important surviving medieval monument of the city, dated back to the 5th century! Every year on July 26th, it becomes the epicenter of one of Chalkida’s most important celebrations and currently it is being restored.
